Where to Stay in Bajamar Tenerife: Natural Pools, Surf and Authentic Island Life

Published by Pambnb · Vacation Rental Experts in Tenerife Where to stay in bajamar tenerife

There are two kinds of people who visit Tenerife. Those who head straight south to the resorts, the sunbeds and the all-inclusives, and those who discover the north and never quite get over it.

Bajamar belongs firmly in the second category.

A small coastal village on the northeast tip of Tenerife, Bajamar is known for three things above all else: its famous natural seawater pools, its surf, and the kind of relaxed, unhurried pace that makes you forget your real life exists. No hotel chains, no strip bars, no tourist touts. Just a long promenade, crashing Atlantic waves, excellent seafood restaurants, and a community of locals and long-term visitors who return every year and quietly hope nobody else finds out about it.

If you are wondering where to stay in Bajamar, Tenerife, this is your complete guide: the best apartments, the natural pools, what to do, where to eat, and why this corner of the island might just be the most underrated destination on the whole island.

Why Stay in Bajamar?

Bajamar sits in the municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, on the northeastern coast of Tenerife. It is greener, cooler and wilder than the south, with the Anaga Rural Park rising dramatically behind the village and the open Atlantic stretching endlessly in front.

The natural pools are the headline act. The Castillo de Bajamar complex is one of the most famous natural pool systems in the Canary Islands: two large Atlantic-fed basins for adults, a dedicated shallow pool for children, lifeguards on duty in season, showers, and a promenade lined with cafes and restaurants right alongside. Entry is free, the water is always moving and clean, and on days when the swell is up, the spectacle of waves crashing over the breakwater wall is genuinely breathtaking.

Beyond the pools, Bajamar offers:

Surf culture. Playa del Arenal is one of the best surf spots in Tenerife, with a proper surf school (Green Wave), a resident surf community, and a cluster of surf bars and casual restaurants that give the village its laid-back energy.

Hiking. The Anaga Rural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of ancient laurel forests and dramatic ridgelines, starts essentially at the edge of town. The PR-TF-12 trail connecting Cruz del Carmen to Bajamar is one of the most rewarding day hikes on the island, dropping over 1,000 metres through stunning scenery.

La Laguna UNESCO. Just 15 minutes by car, the historic centre of San Cristóbal de La Laguna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: colonial architecture, lively student atmosphere, excellent local restaurants and one of the most beautiful cathedral squares in Spain.

Authenticity. In Bajamar you will find privately-run apartments and local guesthouses, not hotel chains. You wake up to ocean sounds, buy bread from the local bakery, and eat lunch at the same terrace where the fishermen eat. That is the Bajamar experience.

The Natural Pools of Bajamar: Everything You Need to Know

No guide to where to stay in Bajamar would be complete without properly covering the natural pools, because they are the reason most people come here in the first place.

The Castillo de Bajamar pool complex sits right on the seafront, a short walk from all three Pambnb apartments. It consists of two large saltwater pools for adults and one shallower pool specifically for children and families. The pools are fed directly and constantly by the Atlantic Ocean, with the tidal movement bringing fresh, clean water in and out continuously.

A stone breakwater wall separates the pools from the open sea. When the swell is calm, the pools are serene and safe for swimming, with crystal-clear water and excellent visibility. When the Atlantic is rough, waves crash dramatically over the wall and pour into the pools in a spectacle that is genuinely worth watching even if you choose not to swim. On the very roughest days, the local authorities close the pools for safety, which is worth checking before you plan your session.

Practical details:

  • Entry is free, year-round

  • Lifeguards are on duty during peak season

  • Showers and changing facilities are on-site

  • The pools are accessible for people with reduced mobility via ramps and steps

  • Parking is available nearby

  • Cafes, restaurants and shops are all along the promenade adjacent to the pools

  • The iconic Faro de Bajamar lighthouse is right next door

Things to Do in Bajamar, Tenerife

🏄 Surfing at Playa del Arenal

Bajamar is one of the best surf spots in northern Tenerife. Playa del Arenal has consistent waves, a proper surf school (Green Wave Surf School), rental equipment, and a surf bar culture that makes the village come alive in the late afternoon when sessions end. Even if you have never surfed before, Bajamar is a great place to try a first lesson.

🥾 Hiking in Anaga Rural Park

The Anaga Rural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, rises directly behind Bajamar. It is one of the oldest laurel forests in the world, with trails winding through cloud-covered ridgelines, hidden villages, and dramatic coastal viewpoints. The PR-TF-12 trail from Cruz del Carmen down to Bajamar is one of the most popular, descending over 1,000 metres through pristine forest. Take the bus up and hike back down.

🏛 La Laguna UNESCO Historic Centre

Just 15 minutes by car, San Cristóbal de La Laguna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most beautiful historic towns in the Canary Islands. Colonial mansions, a stunning cathedral, cobblestone streets, local markets, and a lively student population from the University of La Laguna make it worth at least a half-day visit.

🐠 Snorkelling and Diving

The rocky volcanic coastline around Bajamar and neighbouring Punta del Hidalgo has excellent snorkelling, with clear water, diverse marine life, and the natural rock formations creating interesting underwater landscapes. Equipment can be rented locally.

🌊 Punta del Hidalgo

A 10-minute walk or 5-minute drive north of Bajamar, Punta del Hidalgo is the very northeastern tip of Tenerife. It has additional natural pools, a dramatic lighthouse standing 50 metres high, and some of the most spectacular coastal scenery on the island. The walk between Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo along the coastal path is one of the most scenic short walks in the north.

🌋 Teide National Park Day Trip

Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak at 3,715 metres, is about 50 minutes from Bajamar by car. The national park landscape of volcanic craters, lava fields and lunar terrain is unlike anywhere else in Europe, and the cable car takes you within striking distance of the summit.

Where to Eat in Bajamar, Tenerife

Bajamar punches far above its size when it comes to food:

🐟 Seafood on the promenade. The restaurants along the seafront serve the catch of the day: fresh vieja (parrotfish), grilled fish, seafood rice, and the Canarian classics of papas arrugadas and mojo rojo. Portions are generous and prices are honest.

🏄 Surf bars and casual lunch. Nami Surf Club is well regarded locally for burgers, sushi bowls, vegan options and cheesecakes. La Ola Sunset Cafe sits directly on the seafront with views of the waves and a broad food menu. Both are worth knowing about for a relaxed lunch or late afternoon meal.

☕ Coffee and breakfast. Local cafeterias open early, serve strong coffee and fresh pastries, and operate at a pace and price that reminds you you're in a real Canarian village rather than a resort.

🌅 Sunset drinks. The promenade is made for it. As the sun drops toward the horizon and the waves pick up their evening rhythm, find a table outside and order a cold Dorada or a local wine. The Bajamar sunset with La Gomera or Anaga mountains in the background is one of those Tenerife moments that stays with you.
